The new fare readers being introduced as part of AFC 2.0 will be installed at every door on Green Line trolleys and buses. This will allow customers to board at every door, but it also means the trolley or bus driver cannot ensure everyone pays their fare on every trip.
We’ll need to introduce a new process for fare inspections, and we think this is how they’ll work: MBTA employees will board vehicles at random and ask everyone to tap their card or phone on a handheld device to verify their payment.
Before we enable this policy, we will hold a public workshop about fare inspections. We need your input to ensure we’re holding people accountable in equitable, efficient ways. We also want to hear how you think the MBTA should be held accountable in this process.
